class descriptions

mysore

The traditional class of self-practice with teacher assistance.
Progress in Ashtanga requires a regular practice. A minimum of 4x a week is required. Out of town visitors are welcomed to drop in.
For early morning classes, use the side entrance at 4000 Albemarle.

ashtanga basics

Basics is structured around learning the postures and vinyasas (connecting movements)  of the Ashtanga series. Class consists of breaking down and practicing postures. The first two movements of an Ashtanga class are quite detailed. These two movements are called Sun Salutations and they build heat, strength and stamina. After working on the Sun Salutations, the class moves onto standing postures and then finally floor postures. The majority of postures in the standing series for beginners are variations of forward bends. New postures are added slowly and  with practice we refine all the movement in general. The pace of the class is for first timers. Unlike our other classes no walk in's are allowed.

level I

We start using easy pranyamas with comfortable posture.  The whole approach of Svastha yoga is to create clarity and light. This a good class for people who have not done much yoga or would like to work on the gentle side of posture's.

level II

This class assumes some prior breath work and the ability to hold postures comfortably. Still a breath first class that works with more advanced pranyama's as they apply to posture.

open I-II

A good class for students with abilites ranging from advance beginner to a strong intermediate practice.
This class mixes the vinyasa (breath movement system) of Ashtanga with elements and postures from many traditions.

rocket series I

Rocket 1 is a modified ashtanga sequence for both floor and seated postures. Not for first-time students. Standing postures focus on leg strengthening, hip opening and balancing. Students are also introduced to inversions like handstands and forearm stands for the first time.

svastha Yoga

A system developed by A.G Mohan and his wife Indra. Svastha is a breath-first technique used to maximize the results of our postures. This is a non athletic class that uses and educates the student to use yoga as a therapeutic tool.
